The Opportunity


Reporting to the Manager, the Clinical Leader Development (CLD) is a Registered Nurse who primarily provides leadership in the professional/practice development of direct care nurses, among other disciplines. As a clinical expert, the CLD will be a resource and mentor for nursing within the team. The CLD will promote outcome focused performance, enhance communication and teamwork by implementing education strategies. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:



  • Implementation of the education process; certification and re-certification of Beyond Entry Level Competencies.

  • Facilitates and provides clinical development of all nursing staff with added emphasis on new staff members.

  • Provides education sessions based on identified needs of the neonatal care team.

  • Develops and supports a clinical skills mentoring process with staff, with a peer approach to learning.

  • Develops and supports teaching skills and knowledge among all team members.

  • Facilitates and supports quality improvement initiatives; engages in centre-wide education initiatives.

  • Facilitates, develops and implements courses and activities that support practice needs and trends in the health care environment.

  • Participates in on-going self-development and professional learning.

  • Demonstrates high level of initiative, independent thinking, judgement, and creativity when making complex decisions.

  • Mentors team members through a supportive learning environment by assessing learner competency, providing flexible learning experiences, modeling professional practice, and providing required feedback.

  • Works collaboratively with manager, preceptor, and staff to develop learning plan that supports ongoing practice progression.

  • Develops and implements learning needs assessments for both new and existing staff and for specific additional nursing roles.

  • Models behaviour that is aligned with the mission and values of the IWK including promoting and practicing quality and safe patient care.

  • Demonstrates expertise in collaborative patient centred and family integrated practice.


Hours of Work


Monday to Friday; 7.5 hours. Day shift.


Your Qualifications



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required (candidates with equivalent experience and education will be considered). Master’s Degree Preferred.

  • Registered with NSCN, or eligible to be registered, required.

  • Relevant CNA or other Specialty Certification preferred.

  • Recent (within the last 5 years) nursing experience relevant to the area required.

  • Minimum Five (5) years of relevant nursing experience required.
  • Current NRP Certification required.

  • Current CPR BLS Provider Course required.

  • Demonstrated skills in promoting learning and clinical development required.

  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills required, both written and verbal.

  • Demonstrated excellent leadership, mentoring, interpersonal, problem solving, decision making and organizational skills required.

  • Demonstrated facilitation and presentation skills required, as well as team building skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team required.

  • Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning required.

  • Demonstrated expert negotiation and conflict resolution skills required.

  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and practice required.

  • Competency in other languages considered an asset.
